Nouns, Animals & Parts of the body

All nouns have a gender in German, either masculine, feminine or neuter. There is not a specific rule in recognizing each gender, so you have to memorize the gender of each. However, below are some quick general rules to aid your memory.

  1. Male persons or animals, the seasons, months and days are all masculine, as are nouns ending in -ant, -ast, -ig, -ik.
  2. Female persons or animals, and numerals are all feminine as are nouns ending in – a, – anz, -ie, -heit, – keit
  3. Young persons or animals, things, places, countries are all neuter.

All nouns in German are capitalized in writing. All nouns (as well as pronouns and adjectives) have a case depending on the function they serve in the sentence
