All nouns have a gender in German, either masculine, feminine or neuter. There is not a specific rule in recognizing each gender, so you have to memorize the gender of each. However, below are some quick general rules to aid your memory.
- Male persons or animals, the seasons, months and days are all masculine, as are nouns ending in -ant, -ast, -ig, -ik.
- Female persons or animals, and numerals are all feminine as are nouns ending in – a, – anz, -ie, -heit, – keit
- Young persons or animals, things, places, countries are all neuter.
All nouns in German are capitalized in writing. All nouns (as well as pronouns and adjectives) have a case depending on the function they serve in the sentence
